Verifiable Credentials are secured digital versions of your personal data or credentials that provide specific information about yourself, such as your national identity or driver’s license or perhaps even your educational qualifications. This data is managed and shared (at your request or with your consent) in a secure and trustworthy manner. Specific personal  information can be easily and securely shared with any organisation or person that requires that data for verification.

The concept of Verifiable Credentials is centred around 3 key pillars: The Holder, The Issuer and The Verifier.

The Holder: The individual (or entity) who owns the information or Verifiable Credential and stores that credential in their digital wallet. For this example let’s assume the credential is the user’s South African Identity Card.

The Issuer: The organisation that has the authority to issue Verifiable Credentials such as the Department of Home Affairs issuing a national identity number. 

The Verifier: The person or organisation to whom The Holder needs to prove the legitimacy of that credential like a company needing to check an employee’s Identity details (name, surname and ID number).
